The Founder Excavation Framework
Founder led brands hold strategic information that ordinary research cannot reach, but the information does not surrender itself to a standard questionnaire. It surfaces in asides, in unusual emphasis, in the things a founder says with heat and then waves away as unimportant. The Founder Excavation is a method for conducting the conversations that recover this material, and for separating the founder's genuine conviction from the professional narrative they have learned to perform.
It moves through three layers. The stated story, which is the version the founder tells investors and press, useful mostly as a map of what they think they should say. The working truth, which emerges when you ask about specific decisions rather than general beliefs, about moments they refused a shortcut or turned down money. And the buried conviction, the reason underneath the reason, which usually appears only once and often almost by accident. The brand is built from the third layer, not the first.
